[[ Tagging Shizuka and Sho for nowww xD ]]
The life of a rookie detective, Adachi found, was not much of a life at all.
In all honestly, Dojima didn't give that exciting of posts, and his tasks were usually that of babysitting the senior detective's nephew, as if the kid was going to just pop out of nowhere and hang people upside down before a crowd of spectators, or standing around... watching people. Dojima didn't seem to trust him with anything that wasn't coffee, or simple standing around doing, well, nothing. Man, he wasn't that clumsy, was he?
The lanky man dragged out a sigh, leaning against his lamppost. The Central Shopping District was one of the few places Dojima ordered him to "guard", the other usually being Junes, where he could at least get some grocery shopping done before the day was over. This sunny afternoon, however, he decided to spend the day standing in front of the gas station (of which he still couldn't find that kid who was attending to him his first day in Inaba; he seemed to have been a friendly fellow, and could have offered some of this much-needed company).
Adachi checked his watch -- 3:02pm. Kids should be getting out of school by now, and who knows, maybe even Souji-san would show his face in the shopping district today. He hated being alone all the time... He greatly enjoyed those rare occasions when Dojima-san would take him out for booze. Unfortunately, he had to put an emphasis on rare.
A short girl walking down the sidewalk caught the detectives attention, though he could tell by her uniform that she wasn't from Yasogami. She looked alone, however -- all the other females he saw walk by were usually in groups or pairs, chatting amiably about silly things. A high school girl alone was a rare sight.
The detective put on his best smile, crooked as it may be, and walked over to the brunette. "Oh, excuse me. You're not alone, are you?" Adachi did his best Officer of Justice voice. It wasn't really flirty or anything; he was just having a little bit of fun, "It's not safe to walk around on your own, you know. Not with all of these recent murders. You never know who or who you shouldn't trust, and I wouldn't want anything to happen to someone on an innocent shopping trip."

It had been a long day, made even longer by lectures and the fact that both of her clubs hadn't been meeting today. That meant she'd have to go home earlier than she usually did, and she didn't think she'd be able to stand the silence today.
Stopping by the shopping district for a bit had seemed like a good idea at the time, but the sight of all the other students in pairs or groups, laughing and conversing, only served as a reminder that she wasn't doing too well at this whole having friends business.
So lost in thought was she that she failed to notice the man in the suit until he spoke to her. With hazel eyes widening in surprise, she jerked her head up, an apology already leaving her throat.
"I'm sorry, um--" A closer look at his suit revealed that he wasn't a businessman, as she'd originally thought. A policeman, or a detective...? Great, now she was inconveniencing public defenders. Public defenders who were doing their best to sound official, despite the rumpled state of that tie...
Shizuka nervously tightened her grip on her bag, casting her eyes up in embarrassed submission. "I'm sorry," she repeated, a little more firmly this time. "I wasn't planning on staying out too long, sir, and..."
She stopped now, wondering just how she was going to explain this. Unlike the other people walking around, she was alone, but it didn't sound right to just say she didn't know anyone who'd want to go shopping with her. Telling rumors to the weird girl was one thing. Getting fortunes read by the weird girl was another. Shopping with the weird girl? Out of the question.

Sho glanced briefly at his cellphone. 3:00, huh? Shiki probably still had club, and so he wouldn't be expected home for at least another two hours. It wasn't that he cared so much about his parents knowing when he did or didn't have club, but he knew that if he went home now there would be plenty of work waiting for him that he really just didn't feel like doing. On a day when he didn't have practice or a student council meeting, he didn't want to worry about house-hold work, either. The term 'family obligations' didn't exactly keep him very motivated.
So he decided to kill time. There was a new book that was released the day before--maybe he would pick it up then go find somewhere to read. Homework he could do when he got home to give him further excuse to avoid work. I'm not normally this negative. Maybe I'm not in a good mood today.
He had parted with his friends by the school gate a few minutes ago, and so when he paused for a moment in the shopping center, he realised that being alone was, well... Making him stand out a little. Not that he cared so much, because he wasn't in a very sociable mood at the moment anyways. But then again, upon closer inspection, it looked like one of school mates was being interrogated by a police detective?
Curious, Sho listened in as he got closer--trying to figure out the girl's name at the same time. Manager of a sports team, isn't she? He vaguely remembered scolding her about her team's use of the the gym. Nakano. But what was her first name again? He pushed that question out of his mind, though. The detective (one that he noticed always lingering around the shopping district--didn't he have anything better to do? There's a murderer about and he's moping around a gas station) was asking the girl if she was alone and Sho's mind automatically followed one of the potential outcomes for the conversation. And as student council president, he couldn't allow one of his kouhai to be hit on by an older man and the inevitable conclusion which came from that.
"Nakano-san," he called, crossing the street towards the girl and the detective. "I'm sorry to keep you waiting." Sho put on his usual charming smile and hoped that she would play along. "Is something the matter, Officer?"

Adachi couldn't help but chuckle at the girl's obvious discomfort. Didn't kids know that if you were confronted by an officer, do your best not to look guilty of something? However, the schoolgirl looked more frightened then guilty. Adachi never knew he possessed the ability to be frightening.
He was about to comment on her amusing reaction when a voice called out, yet another student walking towards them. This time a boy, and by his tone, a friend of hers. Or a boyfriend? Kids sure grew up fast these days.
Oblivious to the act, Adachi grinned, patting the shorter girl on the head in a warm gesture.
"Ohh, so you were expecting a date, Nakano-san. Well, I feel better knowing that you aren't going to be walking around alone," he reached up to run a hand through his own unkempt hair, laughing, "Nah, there's nothing to worry about. Just making sure the streets were safe, you know? We don't need any more murders around here."
The detective stepped back a little and straightened his tie, though it still didn't do him any justice. Looks like it's back to watching people walk around. He waved his hand at the highschoolers cheerfully, "Ah, sorry to keep you guys. Have fun on your date! If you find yourselves in any trouble, just holler."

Shizuka turned her head just as the detective did, watching the student's approach blankly until he got closer. Then recognition had her stiffening up, bracing herself for yet another blistering lecture about her irresponsibility as a team manager. She had honestly done her best to ensure that the basketball team didn't hog the gym for practice, but when half of the teams never bothered showing up to utilize the building, there wasn't much use in not taking advantage of it.
His apology didn't help matters at all. If anything, Shizuka became even more concerned that she'd forgotten something vitally important and that she was supposed to have met with the president... for some reason. A quick run-through of the day's events yielded no satisfactory answer, and she was about to ask just what he was talking about, when the detective's hand landed lightly on her head.
"Eh-- date??" Just as oblivious to the act as he was (and fighting off the instinctive surge of annoyance at the headpat), Shizuka looked like a deer split seconds before a car struck. He thought they were on a date? Didn't he realize that Sho didn't even like her, and that he was probably going to think she was some kind of hussy, hanging around with an older man--
Oh. Perhaps it wasn't that she'd forgotten, it was just that Sho had come to conclusions and was trying to... protect her? Maybe it was some kind of duty he'd assigned himself... at least he didn't look as annoyed as he had last time.
"I wasn't waiting long, Senpai!" The reply was sort of belated, but admirable enough for someone who was still reeling from things. "And he was just keeping me company..." A glance at the detective had her looking thoughtful. He seemed almost... lonely. It was a feeling she could understand too well, and she might have stayed that way if he hadn't approached her in the first place. Likewise, Sho might not have stopped if she'd been alone. And now the poor man would be left alone again.
"Um," she ventured, taking a step forward to compensate for the one the detective had taken back. "I-it's not a date or anything, he's just helping me shop for dinner. I'm... usually alone, but he was nice enough to offer. I-- that is-- would you like to come with us, sir? It shouldn't take long, and... well, it sort of gets boring around here at this time, I think. You'll still be able to patrol the shopping district. Unless you'd rather not, and then I understand!"

Date? No, of course it wasn't a date. What kind of guy would he be if he took a girl on a date to the Shopping District? Sho rubbed the bridge of his nose, pushing his glasses out of the way as he heaved a sigh. But he didn't have to say anything as the girl scrambled to apologize and clarify the situation. But at least she caught on and didn't try to question why he had suddenly decided to intervene. Then again, he thought it might be a good idea to apologize to her later for butting in the way he did...
But shopping for dinner? Honestly, who would ask if they could accompany someone to go shopping for dinner? Not unless they were expecting an offer to come and eat as well, but he certainly wasn't. Sho managed to keep the smile on his face, although it did twitch once at Nakano's request for the detective to join them. He hadn't been planning on actually sticking around for... grocery shopping, if that really what she was going to be doing. "Are you sure that's a good idea, Nakano-san? He's not getting paid to escort high school students around the grocery store." He gave the detective a flat look. Not like he was being paid to stand around striking up conversations with lone high school girls, either.
Maybe I really am just in a negative mood today... Of course, to excuse himself now would be awkward (even though it would have been rude to excuse himself after they had left the detective behind, so at least this way he wouldn't have to apologize for more than just butting in), and so Sho gave a faint sigh. If the detective took her up on the offer, it meant that he would have to stick around. He knew it would be awkward either way.

Adachi was taken aback by the offer. Why would a high school girl be offering to take him anywhere; wasn't that strange by today's standards? An offer towards a detective at that. Dojima would bite his head off if he were to accept.
The lanky man smiled, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly, "Aww, well if you're offering, I suppose I can't refuse!" Adachi chuckled, a goofy grin on his face. "I was about to walk over that way anyhow. Thinking about making cabbage rolls for dinner, haha. Not that I'm a great chef or anything."
Yep, Dojima-san would definitely be hearing of this if he wasn't careful. There was nothing wrong with a officer talking to some kids on the street, was there? Of course he was just doing them a favor by helping them around the shopping district. He couldn't get in too much trouble. Hopefully.
He smiled at the two, mostly at the girl since she seemed to be very hospitable, unlike the boy who had barely said a word since he got here. Adachi chose to ignore what was ever on his mind, deciding to remain oblivious. Turning towards the shops, he pointed out the small general store next to the metalworker.
"Shall we head on over to the Shiroku store, then? Oh!" He laughed sheepishly, "Detective Tohru Adachi, by the way! Just call me Adachi, though." A smile as he held out his hand, "What should I call you two?"

If anything, Sho's cautious words made Shizuka even more determined to be friendly. That, and since Sho was now either stuck with helping her shop or admitting that he'd only pretended to be meeting up with her, she might as well keep up the act.
... And the detective didn't seem to mind, anyway. In fact, he was smiling! That had to mean that he didn't mind "escorting high school students", and she could find some way to repay him for the earlier trouble she'd caused. Anyway, the situation she was in had to be one of the oddest ones she'd ever experienced. Never again could she say she had gone shopping with a detective and the student council president, and the part of her that wasn't still stunned with this development was going to enjoy the new opportunity.
"Shizuka Nakano." The brunette placed her hand in Adachi's larger one, smiling cheerfully. "And this is my senpai, Sho Oshiro-san." This time, her smile was genuine when she glanced over at the older boy. "He's a very kind person."

And just like that... he was stuck accompanying his kouhai and a strange detective who was going to eat cabbage rolls for dinner. Hoping that Nakano wouldn't be foolish enough to invite the detective for dinner, Sho resigned himself to spending the next hour or so grocery shopping. Still, he managed to put on his polite smile as he reached around the smaller girl to offer the detective his hand. "Just 'Oshiro' is fine," he explained. The last thing he wanted was some awkward police detective calling him by his first name.
With a small breath, Sho did his best to shift into an amiable mind set. It wouldn't do very good to have him wandering behind the two while giving off negative vibes. Either way, the three of them would be an interesting spectacle to see walking together, and so he wanted to do his best to give off the least awkward image possible. "After you, Nakano-san, Adachi-san."

"Ah, it's nice to meet you Nakano-san."
Adachi smiled as he gave the girl's smaller hand a soft shake. One side of him always kind of liked the feel of a female high school student's hands, so soft and delicate. Perfectly innocent and untouched. Nakano's hands seemed especially gentle, kind and soothing though also somewhat cool to the touch. It was nice.
Ahaha... You could certainly gain some insight to a person's character simply by a handshake! ... At least that's what Adachi tried to remind himself as he released the shorter girl's hand quickly.
He grinned sheepishly at the boy, hoping to keep his mind occupied with the other new acquaintance, if briefly. He shook the offered hand politely.
"Oshiro-san? No "Sho-kun", or maybe "Oshi-chan"?" The detective chuckled to himself good-naturedly, running a hand through his own mop of hair. "Kidding, don't worry."
Adachi smiled, however lopsided it was, at the two high school students. He sure seemed to be bumping into a lot of kids lately, though they weren't always necessarily unwanted. Actually, he'd met quite a few interesting characters while on duty, and it was quickly discovered how gullible they could be...
But at the moment, there are larger tasks at hand;
Going grocery sho- Ah, escorting some students who are worried about the recent murders.
With a nod, Adachi took the lead, trying his best to look like the unnerved Officer of Justice he was. Clearing his throat, he gave the other two a quick smile. "If any of you two get scared, don't be afraid to hold Detective Adachi's hand! I'll do my best to protect you from harm."

She tried, she really did, and she might have succeeded in keeping a straight face and remaining the epitome of a calm and controlled underclassman in front of Sho, but Shizuka was already struggling with "Sho-kun", and "Oshi-chan" earned a small laugh. This was quickly altered into a cough, and she hurriedly looked away, pretending to be interested in the display in front of the bookstore. It looked as though the newest title had something to do with being manly...
"I-I'll be all right!" Late as usual to the conversation, she offered Adachi a faint smile and a thumbs-up, which she then used to point to herself. "I don't think anything really scary happens when you're just looking at tofu and vegetables, anyway, but please don't trouble yoursel-- oh, they're having a sale!! Look, Senpai, Adachi-san, it's three for one!"
A sign up ahead had caught her eye, and the brunette happily picked up her pace to investigate it. It was an amazing thing how just having company could improve one's mood so swiftly, but she wasn't about to question it.

He would admit: he paled when the detective asked if "Sho-kun" or "Oshi-chan" would be an okay name. Kidding?! All jokes have a degree of seriousness--then again, Sho wondered just how serious this unkempt detective could be. If I wanted something other than Oshiro-san I would have told you so, he thought darkly, a frown pulling at the corners of his mouth. And even Nakano was giggling at the names.
And resisting the urge to say something along the lines of how he would prefer to hold the old Tofu lady's hand instead of Adachi's if he was scared (because, certainly, that would sound weird and overall he would not hold anyone's hand), Sho crossed his arms over his chest as if in protest. But then Nakano was suddenly distracted and ran towards the 'Three-for-one' sign. Wondering just what was going to be forced on him under the pretense of "well there are three of us here, yay we can have a matching set", he called after her, "Three-for-one what?"
It was amazing how different the affect of company was having on Sho than it was for his kouhai.

Adachi gave Sho a cheerful smile, amused by his reaction to the names. Things could be fun if he was that easily riled up, and since he wasn't Dojima-san, there would be no consequences. Not that he took pleasure in teasing! It was all in good fun, of course.
His lopsided smile grew as his attention shifted to the girl, who was now pointing out something else up ahead; a small store advertising a three-for-one deal. On what, he wasn't quite sure yet. Either way, he was all for saving money, despite not having much to spend it on anyway. A cheap dinner was always on his list of favorite things, however. If Inaba had one decent thing going for it, it was the food.
"Maybe we can get matching charm bracelets or something, right Sho-san?" A slight chuckle escaped his lips, adding quickly, "Nah, I'm kidding. I think my partner would look at me like I was a walking rainbow."
Not that he didn't already look at him that way most of the time. At least Dojima-san kept the comments to himself. Sometimes.
Adachi was soon at Shizuka's side, smiling slightly as he watched her happily inspecting the store's produce. He played with his red tie for a few seconds, trying to look at least somewhat professional in front of the cashier that was currently eying him curiously. He failed, miserably. "So, uh, have you found your dinner? You and Sho-san eating together?"

If Shizuka had heard Sho's question at all, she gave no indication of having noticed. Instead, she was already hard at work rummaging through barrels and sections and pausing to check on the state of several cucumbers.
But she responded when Adachi spoke up, pointing to a tall display near the register, which boasted a large variety of red boxes. "Pocky!" From the delight in her voice (and posture and expression), one might have thought that she'd discovered gold bars instead of flavored biscuit sticks, but she couldn't have been happier at the moment. "You can get two additional boxes when you buy one, and they've got a bunch of flavors-- you and Senpai can pick whichever one you want--"
Once again stopping herself and curbing her enthusiasm with a guilty look in Sho's direction, she turned back to Adachi. Older or not, at least the detective didn't make her feel like a misbehaving child. "I need to find the soy sauce, and a good vegetable to go with everything... um, but Senpai's just helping me. I'm sure he's got a lot of better things to do than have dinner with me, and this is more than enough. Oh, but their cabbages looked good, Adachi-san! You said you wanted to make rolls, right?"

Three-for-one pocky? Well, all things considered, that wasn't so bad. Though Sho made a point to ignore Adachi's decided mode of address (Sho-san? That's not what I had said. What is so hard about 'Oshiro'?) and thus the point about bracelets. He was pretty much ignoring most of what Adachi did say--that was, until the comment came up if he was going to have dinner with Nakano. A mixture of responses played across his face, but he had his back to the detective and his kouhai. He looked at them over his shoulder, a little concerned that Adachi might try and invite himself over to her dinner (or even, to make it less suspicious, to add Sho onto the guest list as well).
"What kind of vegetable in particular, Nakano-san?" Sho asked in an off-hand manner. "Endame beans go well with a lot of things, but they taste better if you mix them with some other vegetables." And, deciding to play nice and actually acknowledge the detective, he turned his attention to Adachi. "And why don't you try making something like stuffed grape leaves, but with cabbages? They're not too hard to make, if you have a good recipe to follow..." He knew more about cooking than he did on how to actually cook, but he was sure if he tried then he would probably be somewhat decent at it. He simply never had much of a need to with the family's live-in cook.
