Name: Shizuka Nakano
Age: Sixteen
Date of Birth: September 17, 1995
Gender: Female
Occupation: Student
School: Inoue Prep
Class: 2-1
Personality: You know that girl who always seems to be there when the newest rumor is started? The girl who's there earnestly claiming it's true?
Shizuka is that girl. She believes in rumors without ever pausing to question them, which can lead to trouble-- especially when said rumors are of a romantic nature, which means she'll dash off to congratulate the happy couple-that-really-isn't and get herself written off as a total weirdo. But she really does mean well. She's a kind girl who's at her happiest when she's being useful and helping others to reach their own potential. Due to that, she throws herself into activities and refuses to give up, no matter how boring the task. This leads to her losing her own possessions on an almost-daily basis, as she's too focused on polishing basketballs or doing laundry to remember where she put her schoolbag, or where her sweater could have possibly migrated to.
At school and in town, she's lively and eager to make friends with anyone and everyone (yes, even creepy guys who stand in corners or girls who have perpetual glare lines between their eyes or rivals from the other school). She's quick to smile or laugh at a joke (even if she doesn't always get it) and will volunteer for various duties for her class. She does ramble when she gets nervous, and has an unusual habit in which she will rapidly sign what she's saying. Although she's open and willing to provide a listening ear to whoever needs it, when the questions start coming about her home life, Shizuka will clam up or change the subject, and even snap at the person should the topic be pursued.
Despite her perky attitude, Shizuka also knows when it's time to be quiet and respectful, and is actually very good at being formal... she just doesn't like it.
And then there's her talent for fortune-telling-- more specifically, fortune-telling with tarot cards. Always a lover of the supernatural and occult (but still scared to go into Haunted Houses alone), Shizuka's interest began in astrology and progressed to tarot. It's not uncommon to see her perched on the riverbank or at her desk offering to give readings, and they're usually accurate. This, of course, is not due to some strange power of the great beyond, but because of coincidence, luck, and Shizuka's ability to read people and their reactions, thus allowing her to tell them what they need to hear. She practices with her deck all of the time, trying to see what lies ahead in the future.
Other quirks include a love for plaid, anything of the canine variety, and chocolate milk. Dislikes include anything with carrots in it and her own height, especially compared to those in the basketball team and because she has the tendency to get patted on the head.
Positive Characteristics helpful, cheery, observant, amiable, good diffuser of bad situations, tenacious
Negative Characteristics stubborn, gullible to every rumor out there, easily annoyed at slackers, reluctant to talk about herself, loses things often
Appearance: To start things off, she's short. Very short. Like five feet even, 153 cm short. Toss in 101 lbs and a build that she likes to call slim but is more on the skinny side (and that you should only call delicate or petite if you want her to glare at you) and we have the beginning.
Shizuka has long brown hair that she usually keeps up in a messy bun-ponytail so that it doesn't get in her way (sans the bangs which are always falling into her eyes) and bright hazel eyes that stay focused on one thing at a time. She isn't one to tamper with her school uniform or make a statement, so she looks like your average high-school girl who just so opens to have a pencil tucked behind her ear for club purposes. No wild colors or piercings for this girl.
Outside of school, she wears skirts and sweaters at home, but is more comfortable in capris and loose shirts when going around town. She also sports a stopwatch around her neck, just for her own sense of amusement in timing random things, like how long it takes to buy groceries or who's the fastest on the team.

History: Born and raised in Inaba, Shizuka was too young to want much else than that, and so she was content. Her parents were warm and loving, one an elementary school teacher and the other a businessman, and family dinners were always full of conversation.
Then, when she was nine, they got a new addition to their family: little Hideo. Everyone was thrilled, but then there came a new discovery. Hideo was born deaf.
After weeks of weeping and distraught efforts to give their son the hearing he'd never had, Shizuka's parents were determined to make the best of things and set about learning Sign Language and teaching it to their children. Out of concern that Hideo would be unhappy to see them talking but not be able to understand them without effort, most conversations died and Sign Language prevailed. The atmosphere became so quiet that Shizuka began to feel suffocated by it and, once she was old enough, started joining clubs to have an excuse to stay after school and not go straight home. At school, she still had a voice. At home, she didn't have the courage to speak up, and the attention her parents focused on her little brother invoked a small spark of jealousy. Hideo got special treatment and attention, and Shizuka kept her troubled thoughts to herself and faithfully picked him up from school every day and took care of him like a responsible older sister should.
In the meantime, she was practicing her fortune-telling by the riverbank and earning herself a small following, mostly consisting of housewives who had nothing better to do with their time. This led to gossip about her accuracy and speculation that she really could foretell anything, even clues about the string of murders. At this, the local news station pounced and covered her one day to see if she could shed any light on the case-- and also because any news would suffice in Inaba. Rendered nervous by the insistent questions of the reporter and what would happen if her parents saw her on the news (since they frowned upon her fortunetelling), Shizuka only answered a few questions and made her escape.
A few nights later, she was on the Midnight Channel.
Shizuka's dungeon seems almost cheery and inviting, like a giant fortuneteller's tent similar to something you would find in a gypsy camp. However, the inside is more sinister, with ripped cards scattered all over the floor, smashed crystal balls, kicked-over telescopes. Her Shadow, representing her resentment at having to concede her own comfort to her little brother and the way she's suppressed her true thoughts, is constantly speaking into a megaphone, yelling that she's sick and tired of being pushed aside and that she wishes her brother had never been born, because that was when she was truly happy, and now all she has to rely on is other people's happiness and a stupid deck of cards.
Did you read the rules?: I will pursue my true self!
Writing Sample: Calm down, calm down, calm down, breathe her mind ordered, but her body wouldn't obey. No, it was far too late to calm down. It had been too late ever since she'd made the mistake of opening the door while her parents were in a meeting with Hideo and his teacher at his elementary school. She'd had a split second to blink up at the man, and then he'd lunged forward.
Shizuka fought back, too blinded with panic and flailing arms to get a good look at her attacker. She didn't know what was happening, didn't know who he was or why he was doing this, and a detached part of her mind noted that for once, the house was almost ringing from the muffled cries and grunts of pain and the other sounds of the struggle. Of course, this wasn't the time to find enjoyment in that little fact, because the man was now using his weight to force her backwards.
She braced herself, waiting for something solid to give her enough of an edge to shove back against him-- if she remembered correctly, she was going to hit the television soon-- and then, to her horror, there was no support, everything tilted sharply, and suddenly she was falling into white. No, black. No, white-and-black-and-black-and-white and she was starting to feel sick--
The ground rose up to meet her while she was still too dazed to even begin to try and land properly. Instead, she crashed to the floor, curling slightly in an attempt to rid herself of the nausea and the pain. The darkness creeping in over her senses was almost welcome at that point.
Great, she remembered thinking dimly. The team has a game coming up... and I didn't finish washing their uniforms. I have to...
No one found out exactly what she had to do, for it was at that moment that Shizuka lost her already-shaky grip on her consciousness.
And the rest was silence.
